About Bell County
Bell County was founded in 1850 and named after Peter Hansborough Bell, who served as the third governor of Texas. Between 1877 and 1915, the population of Bell County grew rapidly due partly to the Katy and Santa Fe railroads that came through the county and partly to the ranching and farming opportunities. Today, Bell County has a population of 379,617, and the county seat Belton is one of its largest towns. Bell County runs along the Balcones Escarpment, and Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake serve as homes to deer, antelope, birds, and other wildlife. In addition to its lakes and parks, it offers various attractions for residents and visitors alike, including the Bell County Museum and Bell County Expo Center.
